6’9” Torque – Line #4

Twisted-Tip Splitcane Fly Rod – A Unique Collaboration

This remarkable rod is the result of a unique collaboration between René Beaumont of QQQ Fly Rods and myself, JO Splitcane & More.

René is well known for his innovative square bamboo rods, often incorporating spiral construction techniques. To enhance the performance of this rod, René twisted the tip section at six points along its length. Not only does this create a striking visual effect, but it also allows the tip to be built finer—and therefore lighter—than a conventional straight tip. The result is a rod that feels lighter in hand, recovers more quickly, and delivers a crisp, precise action.

The finished rod measures 6’9” and is designed for a #4 line. It combines modern casting characteristics with the timeless feel and elegance of traditional splitcane.

Naturally, the rod is fitted with handmade tonkin cane ferrules, wrapped with Pearsall’s Gossamer silk, and finished with a custom-turned olive wood reel seat and palm grip.

One of the proudest moments in this rod’s history came at the EWF in Munich, where Charles Jardine chose to use it to open what would be his final casting demonstration. His verdict was simple: an incredible rod, exceptionally precise and responsive.

For me, this was not only a tremendous honour as a rod maker, but also proof that experimentation, craftsmanship, and collaboration can lead to something truly unique.
