This 8-foot splitcane fly rod is hollow-built, following a hollow taper designed to reduce weight while maintaining the strength and character of the bamboo. The tip section is made slightly finer in proportion, further contributing to the reduced weight and giving the rod a faster, more responsive action.
The result is a lively and efficient #6 rod with a crisp recovery and a smooth connection between the angler and the line. Despite its faster character, the rod retains the feel and natural flex that make a handmade split cane rod so enjoyable to fish.
The rod is finished with transparent Pearsall’s Gossamer silk wraps on the guides, allowing the natural colour of the Tonkin cane to remain visible. The intermediate wraps combine transparent silk with fine red tipping, adding a subtle accent to the otherwise understated appearance.
The reel seat is hand-turned by myself from beautifully figured Karelian birch, giving the rod a distinctive natural detail and a truly handmade character.
